What does ANYbotics ANYmal do?
ANYbotics ANYmal is a four-legged autonomous robot built for industrial inspection. It carries a standard payload of visual and thermal cameras, an ultrasonic microphone, a powerful spotlight, and a 360° Lidar scanner. This turn-key platform lets operators collect high-quality inspection data in environments that are dangerous, dirty, or difficult for humans to access on foot — think chemical plants, offshore platforms, and heavy manufacturing facilities. The robot is IP67 rated, meaning it can handle dust and water, and its rugged design protects it from impacts and extreme weather. With a 90-minute battery runtime and automatic docking for recharging, it can cover up to 2 km per charge and run multiple shifts with minimal human intervention.
What makes ANYmal stand out is its AI-powered mobility. The robot uses machine learning to navigate complex, multi-floor plants designed for humans — including open grated stairs, wet and uneven terrain, and low-crawl spaces. It operates safely alongside workers thanks to hardware emergency stops, warning lights, and safety handles. ANYmal can also integrate with existing plant systems and carries up to 10 kg of custom payloads, such as gas concentration sensors or acoustic imagers for detecting leaks and partial discharges. Its onboard edge computers (two Intel i7 processors) process data in real time, and the Data Navigator platform turns inspection data into actionable insights like temperature trends and anomaly alerts.
ANYmal is best suited for industries where regular inspection is critical but risky or costly — oil and gas, power generation, mining, and heavy manufacturing. Maintenance teams can use it to take thermal readings of electrical cabinets, detect gas leaks in confined spaces, or visually inspect pipelines without sending workers into harm's way. The robot's autonomous operation and reporting capability reduce unplanned downtime and free up human inspectors for higher-value tasks. It is a practical, no-no...
