What does Lightform do?
Lightform was a projection mapping system that combined specialized hardware (the LF2+, LF1, and LFC Kit) with a desktop content creation app called Creator. It let users scan real-world surfaces using structured light, then project adaptive, generative visuals onto those surfaces in real time. The LF2+ model added sound-reactive capabilities, so projections could pulse and shift with music. The company has since closed, but the products were designed to bring theme-park-level projection effects to art installations, retail signage, events, and home decor.
The workflow was straightforward: scan your scene with the Lightform device to get a precise 3D map, create content inside the Creator software using computer-vision-powered effects, then publish the content back to the device for real-time projection. Creators could work on effects that automatically aligned with the physical environment without manual calibration. The software included generative effects that adapted to the geometry of the scanned space, making it possible to project animated flames, flowing water, or abstract patterns that hugged the contours of walls, props, or furniture.
The main audience was artists and designers who wanted to add dynamic projected visuals to their work, event producers building immersive environments, and retail brands looking for eye-catching signage that could be changed on the fly.
