What does Referent do?
Referent is an AI-native practice management platform built specifically for law firms. Instead of manually entering every client, matter, and task into a legacy CRM, lawyers can tell Referent what needs to happen — and its legal AI agents handle the operational work. The platform handles client intake, organizes case files, drafts engagement agreements, schedules meetings, and even sends calendar invites. Lawyers stay in control by approving every critical action before it goes through.
The tool connects with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive to automatically link emails, files, and events to the correct matter. It also supports voice commands — you can say "Move Acme Inc. to In Progress, draft their engagement agreement, schedule a review meeting for tomorrow, and email the client a calendar invite" and Referent executes the steps. Every AI action is logged and auditable, and the company states it never trains models on firm data or sells client information.
Referent is best suited for solo lawyers who want to operate like a larger firm, boutique firms looking to standardize workflows, and eventually big law practices that need an AI operations layer across practice groups. It's currently in private beta, backed by Google for Startups and Nvidia Inception Program.
