What does Codex Dream Skin do?

Codex Dream Skin is a free, open-source project that lets you dress up the Codex desktop app with your own visual style. It doesn't replace the Codex interface or patch the official app package. Instead, it injects CSS and small decorative elements at runtime, so the real controls, sidebar, and menus stay exactly where they are. You choose a theme — like Tokyo Velvet, Sakura Suite, or Executive Navy — and the tool applies it as a background and accent layer beneath frosted content panels. When you're done, restoring the stock look takes a single click.

How does it work? The project uses a local Chromium DevTools Protocol (CDP) endpoint on your machine (127.0.0.1 only) to connect to the running Codex process. It validates the renderer, then applies the visual layer. Nothing is written to the Codex app bundle, asar file, or WindowsApps folder. The official package stays untouched, so updates and code signatures remain intact. The tool supports macOS (shell script) and Windows (PowerShell), and includes a built-in restore path. The design is intentionally non-invasive: native controls stay native, and the theme is just the atmosphere.

Who is this for? Anyone who uses Codex daily and wants their coding environment to feel more personal without risking stability or losing official support. Developers, designers, and remote workers who spend hours in the workspace will appreciate the ability to switch moods — from a calm Zen Studio to a functional Terminal Zero — without breaking the underlying app. It's also a great example of how to build a safe, reversible customization layer around a modern desktop app using local CDP injection.
