What does Underleaf do?
Underleaf is an AI-powered writing and LaTeX assistant built for academics. Its main trick is turning handwritten math equations, lecture notes, and even PDFs into clean, copy‑ready LaTeX code. You upload an image (JPEG, PNG, or PDF) of your notes, and Underleaf spits out the corresponding LaTeX – complete with previews. It also handles tables, Excel sheets, and ArXiv papers, converting them into LaTeX format. Beyond conversion, Underleaf offers a suite of writing tools: an abstract generator, thesis statement builder, paraphrasing tool, and AI summarizer. There’s a citation tool and keyword generator for research papers too.
How does it work? Most of the magic happens in the browser. You can upload images directly or use the Chrome extension to grab content from any page. The AI processes the input and returns LaTeX code that you can paste into Overleaf, TeXShop, or any LaTeX editor. Underleaf also includes a TikZ generator for diagrams and a table builder. The Pro plan gives you 500 credits per month, converts up to 20 PDF pages at once, and includes priority support. A free plan is available (no credit card required) with 200 credits monthly and basic features.
Underleaf is built for anyone who writes academic documents: undergraduates, graduate students, professors, and research teams. If you’ve ever spent hours formatting equations or copying math from handwritten notes, Underleaf cuts that time significantly. The tool is also useful for converting legacy documents (like old PDFs) into editable LaTeX. It’s straightforward – no machine learning hype, just a practical tool that does one thing well and adds a few extras on top.
