What does Ponytail do?
Ponytail is a ruleset that makes your AI coding agent write the least amount of code that works. Think of it as a senior developer who's been paged at 3AM too many times — he says nothing, writes one line, and it works. The goal is to cut out unnecessary abstraction, premature optimization, and over-engineering that AI agents tend to generate.
The tool uses a seven-step decision tree called the Ladder. It asks: does this need to exist? Is it already in the codebase? Does the standard library do it? Can it be one line? Only after exhausting simpler options does the agent write new code. You can set intensity to lite, full, or ultra — lite suggests alternatives and lets you choose, full enforces the ladder, and ultra ardently insists on the one-liner even if it challenges the requirement. Commands like /ponytail-review scan the current diff for bloat, and /ponytail-audit checks the entire repo. Benchmarks show 54% less code, 22% fewer tokens, and 20% lower cost, while keeping validation, error handling, and security untouched.
This ruleset is best for teams using AI coding agents like Claude Code, Copilot, Gemini, or Cursor who want cleaner codebases without constant manual review. It’s especially useful in projects where code bloat has become a problem, or where token usage and cost matter. If you’ve ever watched an AI agent generate a factory pattern for a single if-statement, Ponytail is for you.
