TalkToDia is an AI language tutor that puts conversations first. Instead of flashcards or fill-in-the-blank drills, it drops you into a voice or text chat with one of over 100 AI personas. Each persona has their own voice, personality, and backstory — a 56-year-old reading by a Boston window, a redhead with fairy lights in her bedroom, a Korean friend named Soo-min. You pick who you want to talk to and what language you're learning, and you start speaking from the first tap. The app supports 43 languages, from Spanish and Mandarin to Swahili and Igbo, and requires no signup to begin.

What makes TalkToDia different is how it handles the conversation. The AI speaker mixes in your native language when you need help and stays in your target language when you're doing fine. You can reply with voice, text, or even send a photo back. The app also includes 100+ preset scenarios — ordering at a restaurant, sitting next to a stranger on a plane, checking into a hotel — so you practice the real-life conversations you'll actually have. Every word you use and every mistake you fix goes into a personal word bank. The app uses spaced repetition to review those words later, and corrections come back gently in context. You can also take a free CEFR-style assessment (A1 through C2) across grammar, vocabulary, writing, listening, and speaking, all without signing up.

TalkToDia is a research project from ETH Zurich, built by a team studying how people learn languages with AI. It's free to start, and the premium plan costs about the price of a coffee. This tool is best for anyone who wants to practice speaking a language but doesn't have a conversation partner handy — travelers preparing for a trip, students supplementing classes, or self-learners who want more than a flashcard app. It's less about memorization and more about getting comfortable with real back-and-forth dialogue.
