What does Runno do?
Runno is a tool that lets you add interactive, runnable code snippets directly to your website. You install it as an npm package, add a few web components to your HTML, and your readers can immediately run, edit, and experiment with code examples in languages like Python, Ruby, and JavaScript. The entire process happens in the user's browser, powered by WebAssembly and the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI), so there's no need for a backend server or for users to install any software.
It works by downloading WebAssembly binaries for each programming language and executing them in a sandboxed Web Worker with an in-memory file system. This setup mimics a Unix-like terminal environment. The tool is highly customizable; you style the code editor and terminal output with your own CSS and control the behavior with JavaScript. It's built on open-source projects like XTerm.js for the terminal and CodeMirror for the code editor.
Runno is most useful for educators, technical writers, and developers who create tutorials, documentation, or coding courses. It removes a major barrier to learning by letting readers test concepts immediately. A blogger explaining a Python function can embed a working example, and a documentation site can provide live SQL queries. It turns static code samples into hands-on learning tools.
