Datree

Datree is a security tool built for Kubernetes. Its primary job is to stop misconfigured resources from being deployed to your cluster. It acts as a gatekeeper, checking every configuration against a set of rules before it goes live. This helps prevent common security pitfalls and compliance issues that can arise from simple mistakes in YAML files.

It works by using a Kubernetes admission webhook. When a new configuration is deployed, Datree intercepts the request and validates it against your chosen policy. You can use one of its built-in policies, which are based on well-known standards like the CIS Benchmark, NSA Hardening Guide, and EKS Security Best Practices. These policies check for things like preventing privileged containers, ensuring resource limits are set, and blocking the use of deprecated APIs. A key feature is local scanning, which means the analysis happens in your own environment, so sensitive data never has to leave.

This tool is most useful for DevOps and platform engineering teams that manage Kubernetes at scale. If you have dozens or hundreds of engineers deploying to clusters, manually checking every configuration is impossible. Datree provides a centralized way to enforce rules automatically. Real-world use includes ensuring all container images have pinned versions, preventing containers from running as root, and catching configurations that would allow a container to access the host system, which are all critical for maintaining a secure and stable production environment.
