What does Kommu do?
Kommu is an AI-powered driver assistance system that you install in your car. It uses three cameras and a powerful on-device processor with 6 TOPS NPU to help with lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, and detecting hazards like traffic lights and speed bumps. The hardware, called KommuAssist 2.0, is a fanless aluminum module that tucks behind your rearview mirror. It has LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and local storage, and works with the KommuAI app.
The software running on it is bukapilot, a community-driven open-source fork of openpilot. It's an end-to-end neural network that handles both lateral and longitudinal control, plus driver monitoring. The system understands road conditions and adjusts accordingly — slowing for curves, reacting to traffic lights, and easing over speed bumps. The company says it follows ISO26262 functional safety standards and uses MISRA C compliant code. Over 10,000 users have driven more than 100 million miles with this software.
Kommu is compatible with cars from Perodua, Proton, Honda, Toyota, BYD, and Lexus. It's not a self-driving car — it's a helpful co-pilot that makes long trips or busy commutes less tiring.
