What does 49agents IDE do?
49agents IDE is a 2D canvas-based interface for managing AI agents, terminals, and projects across multiple machines. Instead of juggling a stack of terminal tabs, you get one infinite, zoomable plane where every running agent, repository, and terminal session lives. The tool shows you real-time status — panes glow blue while Claude is working and pulse vermillion when it needs your permission to proceed. You can connect your laptop, desktop PC, and cloud servers to the same canvas and open terminals on any of them directly, with live CPU and RAM readouts for each machine.
The tool can be self-hosted on your own infrastructure using a simple command line setup — clone the repo, run two commands, and it opens on localhost:1071 with no account, login, or token required. It requires Node 18 or later, tmux, and ttyd. If you prefer not to self-host, there's also a hosted version at app.49agents.com. The project uses a BSL 1.1 license, meaning it's free for individuals and small teams, with paid company plans that add shared canvases, coworking mode, and direct support.
49agents IDE is best suited for developers and AI engineers who work with multiple AI agents across different projects and machines. It replaces the usual clutter of separate terminal windows and SSH sessions with a single visual workspace. Common use cases include running and monitoring several Claude instances at once, granting or denying agent requests from one place, and managing remote servers without leaving your main canvas.
